Nexus Series | Warp 2, Work 11
Margo Selby is an artist and designer working with colour and geometric form in textiles. The handwoven artworks are made on looms of various types and sizes – the Nexus series is made on a 24 shaft dobby loom. Making is a lengthy process of first designing the composition with colours and proportions, preparing the loom, winding the yarn and setting up the warp – before weaving can even begin. A work is made of hundreds of threads each hand-placed and positioned.
Margo Selby often works in series, developing an idea, in colour and composition, across a number of works. Nexus describes this connection, as each work links to the one before.
'I use thread to create abstract geometric artworks that explore repetition and transition, symmetry and asymmetry, pattern and scale. I draw influence from the visual world around me including graphic design; architecture and indigenous textiles. Colour is the driving force behind my work, specifically the varying ways that contrast can be created through putting colours together. I enjoy the infinite effects of many subtle hues and tones that can be explored when blending from one colour to another and the steps that can be taken by taking colours on a journey.'
