Investing in education and community

Our dedication to supporting rug making communities takes many forms. We are proud members of Care and Fair, a program that supports education and improves the quality of schooling in the communities where our rugs are made.

This membership reflects our understanding that the future of hand knotting depends not just on preserving techniques, but on creating opportunities for the next generation of artisans.

In 2025, Margo Selby and her husband, Peter Auckland — our in-house rug consultant with over 45 years of industry experience — furthered this commitment by funding the first-ever house sports uniforms for pupils at Haji Saheb Ali Khanapur School.

While this might seem removed from rug making, it represents our holistic approach to supporting these communities, recognising that thriving craftspeople come from thriving communities.

Hand knotted rugs: Our commitment to craft and community

The craft of hand knotting rugs stands as a testament to precision, skill, and cultural heritage. We've built our studio on a foundation of a simple but strong belief: that investing in traditional craftsmanship means investing in the people and communities who keep these techniques alive.

Hand knotting is widely recognised as the pinnacle of rug craftsmanship. This meticulous, method allows artisans to create rugs of exceptional quality and complexity. Each knot is tied by hand, one by one, creating a dense, durable textile that can last for generations.

These textiles represent a living tradition, passed down through generations of makers who have honed their skills over years of dedicated practice.

Ethics beyond commerce | Building relationships

"The makers we work with are preserving a craft of significant cultural importance. Many of our partners have become friends to whom we are committed both commercially and personally. We really believe that by investing in the education of their local communities, we are investing in the future of this wonderful craft."

– Margo Selby

This philosophy shapes everything we do at Margo Selby Studio. Rather than treating our relationships with artisans as purely transactional, we've cultivated long-term partnerships built on mutual respect, fair compensation, and shared commitment to preserving traditional craft.
