Being an artist + designer
"Hello, I'm Margo Selby, welcome to my studio.....
I have been a weaver for over 25 years, working across art and design.
My ethos is 'Art into Industry' — allowing the two sides of my practice to support and compliment each other.
Craftsmanship
Hand weaving is central to everything I do. This direct making gives me deep insight into how materials and processes work together to create my textiles.
Through my work with mills and manufacturers, I have found the people who make textiles in these settings to be skilled craftspeople and engineers — a reminder that craft lies at the heart of textile manufacturing.
Technique
I'm passionate about the technical side of weaving. This includes the planning involved in making a textile: the mathematics, the loom setup, and how the structure and material relate to this.
In contrast, I have a playful approach to colour, using the woven structure and mathematical pattern as a vehicle to take colour on an instinctive and joyful journey.
Colour + Structure
The structured, disciplined nature of weaving, alongside a creative approach to colour, has become instinctive to the way I lead my studio.
It is the relationship between art and design, colour and construction that has created our studio identity and these elements are recognisable within everything that we do.
Teamwork
While weaving itself can be a solitary practice, I am grateful to the people around me who enable me to work at the scale and diversity of projects we undertake. I am never happier than when all the looms in the studio are running together."
