Workshops at the Margo Selby Studio

Explore Weaving and Colour with Margo Selby | Creative, Hands-On Workshops for All Levels.

Alongside her art practice and textile business, Margo runs creative workshops from her Kent coast studio, led by herself and her studio team. These workshops are designed to support makers of all levels, from complete beginners to experienced practitioners, in exploring weaving, colour, technique, creative problem-solving, and textile design.

Participants may bring their own equipment, such as a table loom, if relevant to the workshop. The studio team is happy to provide guidance and help with setup to ensure you are ready to work.

We are stockists of Ashford looms and can offer guidance on selecting a loom that suits your weaving practice. Please contact us at info@margoselby.com for a price list or to discuss your requirements.

Our 5-Day Creative Weaving Workshop

Throughout the week, participants will work on a range of studio looms, set up to explore different techniques and ideas. Looms will be used in rotation, allowing students to experiment with a variety of structures and approaches.

As part of the course, Margo will lead a dedicated colour and design session using yarn windings. This session explores how colours interact and blend, informing warp and weft selection, and introduces key principles of colour theory, stripe and repeat within woven textiles.

By the end of the workshop, students will have a collection of hand-woven samples to keep and refer to, along with ideas for finishing and future development. On the final afternoon, work will be cut from the looms and discussed as a group.

Weavers who wish to explore a specific technique may bring their own table loom. We are happy to help with the set up during the week and ensure you are ready to weave. Please contact the studio in advance so we can advise and plan accordingly. If there is a particular technique you are keen to explore, do let us know and we will endeavour to support this where possible.

Our 2-Day Colour Theory through Yarn Winding Workshop

Throughout the two days, participants will explore colour theory through the art of yarn windings. Yarn windings are created by wrapping coloured threads around card or wooden forms and are often used by weavers to consider the juxtaposition of colour. As well as being a tool for design, yarn windings can become beautiful miniature artworks. Under Margo’s guidance, participants will create one or more windings exploring stripe, proportion, and colour theory.

“For years I’ve been winding threads around card and wooden blocks as part of design development. These miniature pieces focus on creating beautifully crafted objects, as well as colour and structure studies.”
- Margo Selby

Day One: Margo will introduce her approach to colour, exploring how colours interact and blend, and how yarn windings inform her textile design. Participants will experiment with a wide library of yarns and begin their own winding samples.

Day Two: Participants will develop their ideas into a block winding. Wooden blocks will be provided in different forms, allowing each participant to create a unique finished piece to take home.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have one or more yarn windings, including a finished block, along with ideas to continue developing their practice.
