Margo Selby Educational Placements

Margo Selby Studio is a British woven textile design brand based in Whitstable, Kent, founded by designer Margo Selby in 2003.

Our studio team works closely alongside Margo across weaving, design, production and the wider running of the business. The studio team work together to develop Margo’s artistic practice alongside commercially produced textiles, embodying our Art Into Industry ethos.

The studio produces rugs, cushions, scarves, fabric, towels, bed linen and blankets, working with retail, trade and wholesale customers across the UK and internationally. Alongside this commercial work, Margo and the studio team create hand woven artworks, including large-scale pieces.  Selected exhibitions include Saatchi Gallery, Somerset House and Canterbury Cathedral.

The Placement Opportunity

We offer unpaid structured educational placements to students in textile design and related courses, giving hands-on experience of how a small, independent design studio operates day to day. Placements have ranged from 3 months (minimum)  to a full academic placement year and can be shaped around a student's course requirements.

As a relatively small business, interns will gain insight and breadth of hands-on experience that is hard to find in a larger company. Due to the nature of the placement, we are only able to offer these placements to students with some knowledge and experience of weaving.

What we offer....

A placement at Margo Selby Studio offers students the opportunity to experience both the depth of professional weaving and the realities of working within a busy, independent design business.

Our studio brings together artistic practice, technical weaving and commercial production. Students have the opportunity to spend time during their placement developing their weaving skills,  working alongside experienced weavers and gaining hands-on experience. They will also be involved in the ecommerce side of the business including dispatch and production.

Interns will gain an insight into the day to day running of a creative business, experiencing the changing priorities of a busy studio and seeing how design, production, operations, marketing, sales and customer relationships work together. As a small team, there is a breadth of experience to be gained that may be difficult to find within a larger organisation.

A placement with us suits a student who wants to use and improve their skills in the realities of the textile industry. Interns take on genuine responsibility across weaving, design and ecommerce gaining practical experience to support their next step, whether that is a graduate role or further study. Our best interns come ready to learn, are open to all experiences and are flexible and willing. As with all experiences, you get out what you are prepared to put in.

Whitstable

The studio is based in Whitstable, a coastal town in Kent with a strong creative community.  Whitstable has easy rail links to London but offers students a change of pace from a city placement, with the benefits of a close-knit creative network, while remaining well connected for visits to galleries and industry related events.

We can support with finding accommodation and have several options of rooms available to rent in houses where previous interns have very happily lived while on their placements.

What our previous  interns say....

Dalehna, Former Studio Intern, De Montfort University

"Before joining Margo Selby, I was studying BA (Hons) Textile Design at De Montfort University, specialising in woven textiles. During my six-month internship, I developed my technical weaving skills, gained valuable experience in a professional studio, and built confidence by contributing to a range of projects. Since graduating, I have secured a graduate role as a Textile Designer, and I believe the experience and skills I gained at Margo Selby played a significant role in helping me achieve this. The internship was an invaluable stepping stone from university into the textile industry."

Livvy,  Former Studio Intern, De Montfort University

"Before joining the Margo Selby team, I was in my second year at De Montfort University studying Textile Design, specialising in woven textiles. Now I have finished my studies I am working as a Sourcing and Sustainability Assistant for Urban Outfitters Europe. Margo Selby allowed me to gain insight into nearly every aspect of how a business is run, from tasks like mailing orders, all the way to weaving large artworks. It allowed me to go back to university feeling more confident in myself and my studies."

Tess, Former Studio Intern, Loughborough University

"Before joining Margo Selby for my placement year, I had developed a strong understanding of textile design, particularly woven textiles, through my degree at Loughborough University. I knew I wanted an internship where I could immerse myself in weaving, colour and beautiful textiles, and Margo Selby was the perfect fit. Being part of such a small, supportive team meant I gained experience across so many areas of the business, from weaving and dispatch to social media and customer interaction. It gave me a real insight into the textile industry, strengthened my confidence, developed my eye for detail and organisation, and provided so many transferable skills. I genuinely couldn't have asked for a better first internship, and it gave me a fantastic foundation as I begin my career in the textile industry."

We are always pleased to hear from university placement teams and students interested in gaining experience in textile design. If you would like to discuss placement opportunities for your students, please get in touch with the studio.
