Handwoven Framed Artwork 19,4

Individually handwoven at our Whitstable studio, each unique artwork explores colour and structure. Yarns are revealed, concealed and blended, in geometric designs both subtle and bold.  Warp 19 An intense palette of acid yellow balanced with tints and shades, forms the basis of these new handwoven artworks by Margo Selby, developed from the Tessellation series. The subtle tonal variations within the arresting high-chroma is achieved through the blending of over 5000 threads in the weave structure. Each compositional block is defined also by the textural qualities of the cotton and silk threads. Strong contrasts are made and the emotional  impact of colour is celebrated. In this work a resplendent magenta is paired with the citric lemon yellow. The artwork is framed, behind art glass, in bespoke white wood measuring  approximately 20mm wide, 32mm deep.

Handwoven Framed Artwork: Zoetrope II

Margo Selby: Zoetrope II 2021 112.5cm x 120cm Cotton, Tencel, Silk Price on application / exhibiting and commission enquiries: info@margoselby.com Zoetrope is a unique handwoven artwork conceived as a triptych. Each panel is a discrete object, stretched and framed in white painted wood. When positioned together as is intended, the air between the panels activates – they flicker and animate. Zoetrope is a truly visual work, employing optical effect in an off-kilter symmetry with linear designs and forced perspectives.  A zoetrope is a playful nineteenth century device that gives the optical illusion of movement – a spinning cylinder that makes horses gallop. The name comprises the Greek ζωή ‘zoe’ life and τρόπος ‘tropos’ turning – a fitting metaphor. The vertical format of the panels in the work are reminiscent of the narrow slits of the zoetrope through which sequential images are glimpsed, and the graduating forms give the impression of motion and light. The designs were developed through drawing and yarnwindings, and then executed to an exact plan. There are thousands of strands in this work – each one of those hand-threaded, counted and re-counted. Geometric pattern is made macro in the fractal compositions, expanding infinitely – the forms optically project and recede, creating a sensation of dynamism, and almost becoming images – alluding, as they do, to stairways and steps or pyramid forms. Margo’s handwoven artworks are made on dobby looms in silk, tencel, cotton and wool, and exhibited worldwide. Margo is happy to receive commission enquiries for projects large and small – please contact the studio.
