Handwoven Framed Artwork 10,5

Artwork 10,5 was created for Pick by Pick, Margo Selby's first solo art exhibition by invitation of the Rochester Art Gallery and The Huguenot Museum. Pick by Pick featured a 16-piece installation championing the French technique 'Lampas', creating modern weaving structures with historical context. Individually handwoven at our Whitstable studio, each unique artwork explores colour and structure. Yarns are revealed, concealed and blended, in geometric designs both subtle and bold.  The subtle tonal variations within a piece are achieved through the blending of over 5000 threads in the weave structure. Each compositional block is defined also by the textural qualities of the cotton and silk threads. Strong, or barely-perceptible contrasts are made and the emotional impact of colour is explored. The artwork is framed, behind art glass, in bespoke white wood measuring  approximately 20mm wide, 32mm deep.

Approx. 88cm (w) x 84.5cm (h)

Handwoven Framed Artwork: Vexillum IV

Margo Selby: Vexillum IV 2020 170x 180cm Cotton, Tencel, Silk, Wool Price on application / exhibiting and commission enquiries: info@margoselby.com Woven as part of Margo Selby's 2020 Vexillum series, and exhibited with Design-Nation for COLLECT 2021, the online edition of the Crafts Council annual fair, Vexillum IV is a monumental work, beyond the scale of the dobby loom on which it was made. This technical feat has been achieved by constructing the work in sections, to an exact plan, matching each of 18,000 strands to achieve a powerful cohesive whole.  Geometric pattern is made macro in its fractal composition; its energy expands infinitely. The forms of the design optically project and recede, creating a sensation of movement, and almost becoming images – a chromatic hall of mirrors. In the presence of Vexillum IV a synaesthetic effect is palpable – it sings. It is a celebratory work, but with an element of aggression – a ‘vexillum’ being a portent of battle, as well as a Latin sail, and the delicate fronds of a feathery plume.
