Living Colour Chart

About the project

Share with us your treasured colour and the personal connection you have with it.

We encourage you to describe your colour (e.g. sunflower yellow, fire engine red, deep sunset orange) be as descriptive as you can.

Since February 2024 Margo Selby has been collecting colours from people with their associated memories and stories to create a live and dynamic colour chart which reflects the people in our world.

This project now comes to  Canterbury Cathedral. We are curious to know what colours and stories the Cathedral community and visitors have to share .

Emma | Colour: Raven's Wing Black | I love how it seems plain black until light plays over it and then you get iridescent flecks of blue & purple
Mel | Colour: Navy Blue | It just goes with all my favourite colours.
Philip | Colour: Ipswich Blue | My personal connection to this colour is that it is the colour of my home town Ipswich.
Ellen | Colour: Merlin's Robe Purple | The colour we painted our living room in our first flat together. My partner likes it so much he requested it for our new house.
Leonie | Colour: Cobalt Blue | The colour of the background in the 12th century typological windows. Almost impossible to photograph, and not at all possible to reproduce in CMYK.
Fred | Colour: Spanish Blue | This is the colour of our front door for our family apartment in Spain which is our happy place.
Carolina | Colour: Blue Water | Blue has been my special colour for as long as I can remember. It somehow reminds me of clear waters. That gives me a sense of freedom, and water to me is a source of life, renewal and cleanliness. Blue, water blue, gives me a feeling I cannot even explain in words, but is very real toe me and has been throughout my life. When I became a teenager, my parents let me choose a new colour, and it was no surprise I chose blue 💙 Never lost that connection with this colour.
Lisa | Colour: Blue Seas | Sunny days, blue seas and happy memories.
Kay | Colour: Sky Blue | The happiest of colours, sky blue reminds us of the expansiveness of the universe with our own tiny world therein. My whole family have blue eyes - my late mother having the most piercing blue ones in particular.
June | Colour: Sky Blue | Sky blue reminds me of walking along the beach, relaxing, listening to the sea going in and out, and the blue of the sky on a summer's day.
Sharon | Colour: Sky Blue | Blue reminds me how much I love being by or in the sea, its beauty and wildness. Its my happy place, connecting with God, fun times spent with my family and friends.
Abi | Colour: Seafoam | It's a favourite colour I share with a really special friend, it connects us.
Fred | Colour: Arctic Turquoise | It's the middle of my favourite range of colours.
Mary | Colour: Turquoise | This colour always takes me to the Greek Islands and the turquoise sea, and back to wonderful holiday on many of the islands.
Rachel | Colour: Mauritius Blue | Reminds me of the ocean in Mauritius and the sound of the shore.
Margaret | Colour: Colour of ocean Perth, Australia | I used to teach in Mulloo Heights and drive by the ocean very early each morning....
Clifford | Colour: Electric Lime | Electric lime evokes the fresh, vibrant hue of spring leaves as they first emerge. This color is a symbol of vitality and renewal. After experiencing a near-death event when my heart stopped, I now cherish life and its continuity more deeply than ever before.
Olivia | Colour: Acid Green | It just speaks to me! and it goes with pink and orange, vibrant and happy.
Liz | Colour: Bright Green | The colour of newly unfurled beech leaves. They feel like silk. I had to choose a colour from the natural world.
Cressida | Colour: Shamrock Green | This colour reminds me of nature and of Ireland, where I grew up.
Rachel | Colour: Vibrant Green | From the verdant landscape that cradle us to the vibrant ecosystems that sustain us, green is intrinsically linked to nature. It’s the chlorophyll in leaves, the lifeblood of plants. Seeing green, is a visual reminder of growth, renewal, and interconnectedness of all living things. A simple walk through the woodlands can be a therapeutic experience, the calming presence of green soothing the mind and body.
Pavel | Colour: Grass Green | Grass green fills me with hope. It’s the colour of new beginnings, of growth, and quiet joy returning after sorrow.
David | Colour: Mid Green | It reminds me of my background in the west of Ireland - soft, lush and healing
Jennifer | Colour: Garden Green | Green has so many textures and tones in my garden that create layers of colours …
Sue | Colour: Blossom Green | I'm mourning the loss of my fabulous MX5 green sports car I had for 20 years. After years of sensible cars I wanted something fun and fast, I loved putting the top down and having the wind in my hair.
Gerardo | Colour: Vantablack or Black 3.0 | An absence of distraction. Purity of intent and an envelopment of all other colours. Space, dark matter and eternity. And a little black number is always a classic :-)
Nathan | Colour: Violet | Violet is my daughter's name so it has a very special association, beyond just being one of my favourite colours.
Windahl | Colour: Purple Violet | As a child I was small, on the autistic scale, very sensitive, quiet, extremely introverted and shy. I was very sensitive to colour. Everything had to be purple. My room, all my clothes, and decor objects. I was always drawn to the colour. The smell of violets reminds me also of my grandmother. Grape juice was my favourite. I loved picking blueberries and used to do this at the cottage and raspberries were also a favourite. In our garden I loved the purple flowers most. The lilacs, alliums, tulips, irises, are favourites. My dad had fuchsias in hanging baskets and I thought these were the most exotic things. I associated the colour not with royalty or prestige but as comfort. To this day I still wear purple a lot, the garden has lots of purple flowers, including fuchsias. I include flashes of the colour purple in my towels, bedding, rug and incorporate into my home decor.
Lorna | Colour: Amethyst | During WW2, my father worked in Fort William Ontario at the Canadian Car & Foundry. His job was to check the finished Curtiss Helldiver planes against the draft sheets... making sure all the rivets were in place. Years later he returned to Fort William, which by then was called Thunder Bay. He stopped into one of the local amethyst mines and purchased a small piece of amethyst to remember his time working on the planes during WW2. My father gave me the amethyst and I've carried that piece of amethyst around with me for over 55 years. The amethyst reminds me of my father, of community, of wisdom & memories and especially the beauty that God created & creates continually... all found in a small purple crystal rock. Amethyst.
Sally | Colour: Light Purple | Through my childhood my late mum always said her favourite colour was purple, this has come down to me although I prefer a lighter shade. Many wore something purple to her funeral. 💜
Louise | Colour: Chocolate Brown | It was the colour of the 1980s kitchen counter I sat at every morning where my father would make us hot chocolate and my mother a cup of tea. It was my favourite time of the day.
Sarah | Colour: Sienna | I am always drawn to this colour which is warm and comforting; it reminds me of autumn in Virginia, works by some of my favourite artists and the wooden floors at home.
David | Colour: 1970 Orange | Our 1970s vintage caravan is my families little safe space away from the world. We take it to our farm and have wonderful weekends away from modern day life. The symphony of browns and oranges may be the worst nightmares for some, but for me they represent quality time with my kids and the tranquility of time spent outdoors!
Ru | Colour: Red | Chasing Red Passion-Ru-Yue
Daniele | Colour: Red | I love red, colour of love, of brightness, of joy and life.
Amy | Colour: Ketchup Red | The colour of my favourite rucksack whilst travelling around Japan. It reminds me so much of the beautiful buildings and temples, a colour I associate with this adventure. It's also the colour of my favourite condiment - ketchup!
Jacqui | Colour: Lipstick Pink (Pantone 207 C) | The colour of my mother's lipstick.
Avril | Colour: Bright fuchsia pink | I have never liked pastel pink, but I love deep, vibrant fuchsia pink. On silk, this colour almost vibrates with intensity. I used a silk in this colour to line the inside of the gathered train on my ivory wedding dress. A set of silk roses in the same colour covered the join of the train to the dress. I converted the train to an evening wrap and wear it with happy memories on the rare occasions that justify wearing it. The roses live in my memory box and are sometimes pinned to a jumpsuit, just for fun. I think the colour is Pantone 226C.
Trace | Colour: French Fuchsia | Because it’s such a beautiful colour which is warm and happy.
Victoria | Colour: Living Coral | My favourite colour is coral. This is for a variety of reasons: 1) When I went diving, I noticed that a lot of (living!) coral is actually this gorgeous, warm shade. So now, whenever I see the colour coral, I think about the beauty of coral reefs—and how they’re disappearing because of climate change. It's a little reminder to care more about the planet and make changes where you can. 2) I love coral because every time I wear it, people say, “Wow, that colour is amazing on you”. Saying this, seems to make them happy, and it makes me happy too. 3) Another reason why the colour coral is so spectacular, is because it’s so understated and relatively unusual - which makes it special. 4) It’s also the colour of sunsets in fun places.
Livvy | Colour: Sunset Peach | The colour I always chase since moving to Whitstable.
Peter | Colour: Ziegler Coral | It's the impossible to match coral colour of 1880s Ziegler Sultanabad rugs. Approximately Pantone Coral Rose but with the beautiful variations of the abrash.
Caroline | Colour: Happy Orange | I love orange: it's full of joy and fills my heart with happiness. It makes me think of Atticus and Eric.
Rachel | Colour: Golden Brown | The beautiful colour my rescue dog's eyes go, when the sun hits them.
Kallie | Colour: Golden Brown | Golden brown is the colour of my dog, Mac's eyes. They bring me a lot of peace. When you look into them, and he looks at you, you just know he is seeing you too.
Amy | Colour: Marigold Yellow | It's such a joyful colour that makes me smile. My favourite coat was bright marigold and I have lots of fond memories going for walks with my family in it.
Joy | Colour: Sunflower Yellow | There's something about a bright, warm yellow that hits the happy spot in my brain.
Vicki | Colour: Sunflower Yellow | The sunflowers in south of France, the sun on my face, the memories it evokes.
Sue | Colour: Sunshine Yellow | The colour of the sun - always a joy!
Mary | Colour: Chandu Shajahan | The colour of my cardigan bought 20 years ago for me by my late husband in Edinburgh. I still wear it as often as possible.
