Blackburn Centenary Vestments Commission
‘Unity’ Handwoven Artwork
Commissioned for Blackburn Cathedral, we are proud to present our latest project to celebrate their centenary.
One chasuble and two dalmatic garments have been handwoven in each of the four liturgical colour sets; Green, Purple, Red and Gold; a total of twelve vestments.
The vestments have been presented to the cathedral and formally blessed by the Bishop of Blackburn before being worn during Holy Week, the most sacred week of the year.
Alongside this, Margo has created a large scale handwoven artwork to hang in the cathedral from the 26th of March; a celebratory textile which weaves each of the liturgical colours together as a striking centrepiece. The artwork is entitled 'Unity', and explores the themes of community, craftsmanship and togetherness.
At the heart of this project has been the celebration of weaving and historic craft, reflecting the history of textile making in region.
"This commission has pushed us as a studio and we are really proud of the result. We have spent significant time learning new skills in heritage techniques to make garments where every element is handwoven and handmade.
It was important to us that the garments reflected the quality of the historical pieces we have researched, as well as demonstrating the design aesthetic we are recognised for as a studio."
