Blackburn Centenary Vestments Commission
‘Unity’ Handwoven Artwork
Private View | Margo Selby Studio | 2 - 7 March 2026
Official Launch | Blackburn Cathedral | 26 March 2026
Margo Selby Studio is currently undertaking an ambitious woven textile project, commissioned by The Friends of Blackburn Cathedral to mark the cathedral's centenary. The commission involves the design and hand-weaving of ceremonial vestments in the four key liturgical colours, worn throughout the year. Three types of garments are being made in four liturgical colour sets; Green/ Red / Gold and Purple; a total of twelve garments.
Alongside this, Margo has created a large scale handwoven artwork to hang in the cathedral from the 26th of March; a celebratory textile which weaves each of the liturgical colours together as a striking centrepiece. The artwork is entitled ‘Unity’, and explores the themes of community, craftsmanship, and togetherness in a divided world.

‘This commission has pushed us as a studio and we are really proud of the result. We have spent significant time learning new skills in heritage techniques to make garments where every element is handwoven and handmade. It was important to us that the garments reflected the quality of the historical pieces we have researched, as well as demonstrating the design aesthetic we are recognised for as a studio.’
